Start with the 1.4.8 quiet-voice fix
According to the official Big Walk 1.4.8 patch notes (“Fixes for quiet voices”), the update targets an issue where some players’ voices were much quieter than intended, even when standing up close. The notes say the game now does a much better job of bringing quiet microphone setups up to the intended volume, and that this calibration can take a few seconds once a new player starts talking.
Before any other troubleshooting:
- Confirm the game is updated to version 1.4.8 or newer. The patch notes say the update ships on Steam first and can take a little while to reach other platforms.
- Restart Steam, then relaunch Big Walk so the current build loads.
The quiet-voice bug shipped at launch is now covered by the official patch; it is no longer a problem that most players can only work around. But a voice can still sound wrong for local reasons that the patch does not touch, so the checks below stay useful.
Test beside another player first
The patch notes are explicit that the distance at which voices drop off was not changed. Big Walk still fades voices with distance and can muffle or block them with walls, soundproof glass, or other level geometry. Stand shoulder-to-shoulder with another player in an open area before assuming anything is faulty. If you can hear them clearly up close, the proximity rule — not your microphone — is the likely explanation for voices fading as you walk away.
If voices are still quiet up close
Work through these checks in order:
- Open Settings > Audio and speak normally while watching Microphone Activity. If the indicator does not move, the game is not receiving the microphone.
- Confirm Mute Mode matches how you want to talk. If it is set to hold, hold the assigned control while speaking.
- Open the moderation menu and confirm the affected player is not silenced or muted.
- Check which input device is selected in the audio menu, and reopen the menu after switching devices.
- Test the same microphone in another application or in the platform’s system settings, fully reconnect the headset, and check its physical mute switch and boom-arm position.
- Confirm Big Walk has microphone permission in your operating system or console privacy settings.
If the activity indicator moves but a distant friend still cannot hear you, the microphone is probably working and the distance, geometry, or in-world communication-item rules are the likely explanation.
Network, host, and rejoin checks
The official FAQ connects intermittent voice with network trouble, so rule these out before reporting a fault:
- Swap host so a different player carries the session.
- Leave and rejoin the room.
- Check the host’s connection: stop heavy downloads, move closer to Wi-Fi, or use Ethernet. A low host frame rate can also contribute to network symptoms.
What 1.4.8 fixed and what is still local
The two are worth keeping separate:
- Covered by the 1.4.8 patch: voices that were much quieter than they should be, even up close. The patch notes call this the single most important fix regarding voice volume and say the normalization takes a moment to calibrate.
- Still possible after 1.4.8: distance and wall falloff (by design), a quiet or incorrectly selected input device, a muted player or hold-to-talk state, a missing OS or console microphone permission, and network or host problems.
If the checks above do not identify the cause, report the problem to the developers with your platform, game version, and a description of the setup. The patch notes say the team reads player feedback even though it does not reply to every forum post.
Echo, dropouts, and expected behavior
- Echo or doubled voices: The official FAQ identifies a feedback loop as the likely cause. Have each player mute in turn until the doubling stops. The person causing it should use headphones or mute when not speaking so their microphone does not recapture speaker audio.
- Design limits: Voice fading over distance, becoming muffled through walls, changing through walkie-talkies, or disappearing behind soundproof glass is part of Big Walk’s design, and version 1.4.8 did not change the drop-off distance. Text chat follows comparable limits, so test shoulder-to-shoulder in an open place before reporting a fault.
